More time needed
automation, MARC 648, and discovery by time period of subject

This paper describes an investigation into how existing bibliographic metadata can be used to improve discovery by time period of subject. We describe the benefits of using an exact-year date range for the subject matter of the resource, as recommended by FAST (its Chronological heading) and recorded in the MARC 648 field. We assess the feasibility of automatically generating this date range using either AI or conventional scripting techniques. Finally, we describe ways this metadata can be displayed as a facet in discovery systems.
